Michelle Mullane, raising money for Cancer Research UK

Our story

Welcome to Michelle Mullane’s fundraising page! Michelle set up this page, and created Howl For The Bowel, to raise much-needed funds for Cancer Research UK. Michelle was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in June 2019 and sadly passed away on Christmas Eve 2020 at the age of 50. She was determined to not let her diagnosis stop her from enjoying life, and she was spurred on to raise both awareness about cancer and funds for research into cancer. This is Michelle’s cancer story in her own words: In June 2019, I was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 bowel cancer. I had been feeling tired and was suffering from cramps (the pain was worse than childbirth!), but I thought it was all due to my busy lifestyle. After getting checked out, I received the news from my doctors that they had discovered a tumour in my bowel and, without treatment, I would only have six months to live. That moment changed my life. For those who may not know me personally, you will probably recognise my voice as a former presenter on Key 103 or XFM in Manchester. Everyone who knows me knows that I am an optimistic and bubbly person and I was so ready to fight - determined not to let cancer beat me! I had a stent fitted to push the tumour to one side and began chemotherapy at The Christie, in Manchester. I’m looked after by the most amazing team, headed by Professor Mark Sanders. My daughter, Liv, who was with me in the hospital room as I received my diagnosis, is my rock. She sometimes thinks that I forget I’m on chemotherapy, but whilst the drugs are busy controlling the tumour, I intend to get on with life and live it to the full. Having a bit of energy is just the best feeling in the world. When you have cancer your only priority is to stay alive and it’s thanks to incredible research and fantastic treatment that my disease is being managed and I am still here today. So, I want to give back. I know that because of the impact of Covid-19, Cancer Research UK is estimated to lose £300m over the next three years, severely impacting its research. I want to help continue the advancement of life-saving treatment for myself and other cancer patients by organising the first ever Howl For The Bowel event next year, at The Oast House in Spinningfields, sponsored by The Botanist. This will be a fabulous evening of comedy and live acts, hosted by Jason Manford, with the aim of not only making people laugh and raising money, but to also raise cancer awareness. The money that I raise will all go to Cancer Research UK but it will be split to help fund research into both bowel and kidney cancer. As some of you may know, Tony Morris, Granada News presenter, was a very close friend of mine who I have known for years. He sadly passed away this year [2020] from kidney cancer and so I would like to help make a difference by raising money for research into kidney cancer also, in his memory. It’s very exciting and I am so grateful that you are here supporting me and my fundraising efforts Thank you so much!
