Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life in Memory of Lawrence Rodkin to raise awareness, money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Almost a third of all cancers diagnosed in children are leukemia. Five-year survival for leukemia has quadrupled in the last 40 years, but despite this progress around £4,600 people still loose their life to leukemia every year. Lawrence was suddenly diagnosed with acute leukemia in May 2020 and he spent over 5 weeks in ICU. This all happened too fast and unfortunately, he lost the battle after a short period of time and left his family and friends in a shock. June 2021 will mark 1 year since we lost Lawrence due to this terrible disease and I hope that fundraising in his memory will help keep him close to our hearts. I believe this is a very special and meaningful way to remember him– honoring his life and helping others at the same time. I wanted to do something to help raise awareness to all who could easily let small symptoms go unchecked. This challenge will take some training and mental strength but it is an adventure for me and those who join in and completely worth it to raise the money for Cancer Research UK." Lawrence was an unbelievably funny guy, an amazing boss, an inspiring leader. He was such a brilliant lawyer, passionate and dedicated to his profession, a truly special person. It is still quite bizarre how could this happen to him and why him, since he exercised daily, living healthy, always championing the great benefits of herbal supplements (which sometimes he took overboard, not going to lie). He could not go a day without his exercise, taking his vitamins and supplements. Like most us, in the back of our mind would never think that cancer could happen to us. No, not to us or not to our child, not to our family or friends. We cannot be more wrong. Cancer can happen to anyone. Lawrence had a positive and amazing attitude to life, a will to live. Lawrence was a real extrovert, leaving a footprint in everyone's life that he crossed. At the same time, I wish to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. For example, walking is one of the great ways to improve or maintain our overall health. Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduces excess body fat and boost muscle power and endurance. Physical activity does not have to be vigorous or done for long periods in order to improve our health. Walk, Jog or Run, do whatever you can to make a difference to those fighting this horrible disease which is sometimes discovered too late. Where and how far will you walk or run to fight cancer? Some have walked over 600 miles to cover the South West Coastal Path. Others have walked 5k, while some did it blindfolded. But they all did it with the same aim: to beat cancer sooner. So whether you head to your local shopping centre in your onesie, or make your way from SR Law to Kenwood House (One of Lawrence's favourite garden), walk with purpose. I also created a team for my friends and colleagues who wish to participate to raise awareness, you can join my SR Law team here https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/team/zsofias-sr-law-team/join Every single pound we fundraise will make a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work. YOUR donation can help Cancer Research UK to find better treatments and new ways to prevent this illness at an early stage in adults and children. CANCER WON`T WAIT SO LET`S GET STARTED RIGHT NOW!
