Last year we received the news that my younger sister Jessica had been diagnosed with breast cancer. At the age of 19 it's extremely rare for someone so young to be hit with breast cancer, so much so that only 3 teenagers a year get such a diagnosis. That's a statistic of 1 in 500 million! It was during this period that we found out that Jessica along with my dad and other sister karly are all carriers of the BRCA gene, unfortunately this means that by having this gene their risks of developing breast and ovarian cancer are greatly increased. Just a week after Jessica had fought her way through all of the gruelling treatment of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy our dad who had been suffering with a crippling back pain for the past 6months also got diagnosed with cancer! It turns out that he'd initially started out with an undiagnosed kidney cancer that had now spread to his spine. So bad was our dads spine that when the surgeon removed a section of the spine he commented on how it had been completely rotten through! Which is why on the 16th July Team Cupcake are going to support both my dad and sister on their battles ahead by smashing our way through the pretty muddy finishing line! We have all lost a loved one to cancer in the past, which is why we need to raise as much money as possible so one day people won't have to suffer this way. We know Jessica and our dad are both strong enough to pull through this and will cross their own finish lines together but please help by donating, even the smallest amount will help!
