Me and my best friend Makala have decided to set ourselves a special challenge this year… we’re taking part in the Shine Walk which is a charity event where people walk a whole marathon overnight! There are many fantastic charities out there but one that is very close to our hearts, and one we will be trying to raise as much money for, is Lymphoma UK. This cancer develops in the lymphatic system and flows through the body through the blood vessels. My Mum was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma back in 2015. We noticed a large bump on her chest and many doctor visits later, they confirmed it was a clump of cells which was spreading over her whole chest area. The next 6 months was rounds of chemo and radiotherapy to attack the abnormal cells. Mum described the day after chemo sessions as ‘the worst hangover ever’, it was so tough watching someone so ill and not being able to take it away from them. She also had to get a sample of bone marrow taken from her pelvic bone which apparently was ‘worse than childbirth’… I’m a total wuss with pain so I take my hat off to Mum and what she had to endure. Beyond all this, Mum stayed so positive throughout it all (I don’t know how she did it.) She probably had some moments with Dad to cry but never showed us she was scared. I was scared. Petrified. A total worrier and would text her 1000 times a day to see how she was, lied on her bed with her in the evenings and would make her whatever she wanted to eat, because it would be rare she would be hungry . “I fancy spaghetti and cheese” … Me: “I’m making it now!” Thankfully, about a year later Mum was given the all clear and was able to return to work and get back to what she loves doing. If it wasn’t for the amazing NHS staff and the treatment she received, we might not be able to be with her now so I thank them so much for everything they did for her. All donations go towards the machinery, medication, care, facilities, equipment to make this sort of recovery possible. Any sort of donation will make a huge difference and can help more people like my amazing Mum.
