We are taking part in Shine Night Walk (Oxford) to raise much-needed funds for childhood cancer research

Story

Every day, 12 sets of parents in the UK are told their child has cancer - these are words no parent should ever have to hear. Just before Christmas in 2019, Matt and I were told that our two year old son had leukaemia - time stood still and our world imploded. Samuel has many drugs as part of his treatment protocol, but they are incredibly outdated. The newest is nearly 60 years old. The side effects Samuel has suffered because of these harsh drugs include: complete hair loss (twice so far), nausea and vomiting, neutropenia which has the horrifying complication of neutropenic sepsis, pain, taste changes, infections, diarrhoea, constipation and weight loss. He has had a gastrostomy tube, spent time in Paediatric Intensive Care and his treatment doesn't finish until March 2023. The treatment he has to have could also affect his fertility, the chance for him to have a family of his own. If more research were to be allocated to this, we could have kinder treatments for our children. Sadly, 1 in every 500 children under 15 develops some form of cancer, resulting in around 240 childhood cancer deaths every year - that’s almost one child dying from cancer every day. Joined by friends and family, I will be completing the Shine Night Walk Oxford 10k 2021 to raise vital funds for childhood cancer research. Every donation is gratefully received. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s ground breaking work. Donate today and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
