Story
Lilo and Stich (2002): “Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” ‘Ohana’ is a Hawaiian term meaning family…... in the extended sense of the term. It’s not just about blood relations; it’s the feeling of belonging and unity among a group of people who care deeply for each other. It brings individuals together, supporting one another through joys and challenges, and creating lasting bonds that make them feel like they are part of something truly special. Our Ohana team comprises blood relatives covering three generations aged between 9 and 77, together with some of their nearest and dearest friends who we consider family. Living the ‘Ohana’ way means embracing the values of love, support and mutual care. The nature of our team and the range of abilities brings the importance of ‘ohana’ into context so that ‘no one gets left behind or forgotten’ on the day of the race. Cancer is happening right now. Some of our team members have survived cancer, some are currently being treated, but we have all been affected by cancer in some way, sadly some of us having lost loved ones which is why we are taking part in a Race for Life…... to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work. Last year, we, ‘Valerie’s Team’, raised £1,937 plus £324.25 Gift Aid, contributing to the £23m raised overall in 2023 by those taking part in the Race for Life. In 30 years of the Race for Life, total fundraising stands at £970m. Cancer Research UK funds around 50% of all publicly funded cancer research in the UK, working with over 4,000 world-leading scientists to beat cancer. In additional to this research, Cancer Research UK also fund a fully trained team of cancer nurses able to speak with those diagnosed with cancer or their loved ones. If cancer is currently affecting you and you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to them on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).
