Around about 8 years ago, I returned home from my Erasmus year in France to the discovery that two of my uncles were battling different kinds of cancer, one of whom was told even with radiotherapy and an operation to remove the tumour, it was very unlikely he would make it through the following 12 months. Eight years on, both of them are still here and have beaten the big C, but only thanks to Cancer Research and great specialists in their respective hospitals. We are, however, still losing too many people to cancer and we need to do our bit to halt and - even better - stop more lives being claimed. My family were lucky, but I am more than aware not everyone gets that happy ending to their cancer story. Any funds raised from supporting me will be going to supporting rare cancers, as one of the two uncles battled cancer of the tongue which has completely changed his life forever. Whilst he has beaten cancer, he finds it near impossible to eat anything that isn't liquid as an impact of the removal of his tongue. It has impacted his life in ways we can't even begin to imagine. Raising money for rare cancers will provide further research into the starting point of cancers like tongue cancer and help nip it in the bud so others do not have to experience the same impacts, even after remission.
