Most of us have been affected by Cancer, be that by knowing someone with cancer, losing someone or having had cancer yourself. Many of you will know I lost my dad to cancer 8 years ago. From the moment we were told our lives changed forever. We were fortunate to get almost 3 years from diagnosis with my dad, as his cancer had already metastasised to his liver. During my career I have nursed many patients with a cancer diagnosis, many who have come through the other side, having been successfully treated. We are detecting cancer earlier and statistics show more patients are surviving cancer. I live in constant fear of a cancer diagnosis due to my personal family experiences. Despite seeing positive outcomes it is sometimes easier to dwell on the negative outcomes. I strongly believe that without research my dad Would not have been referred and seen within 2 wks to start the ball rolling with his cancer diagnosis, and without referral and treatment he would not have survived longer than a few months. Whilst he experienced side effects, these were kept to a minimum by the provision of other drugs to counter act the effects, all which would have been subject to clinical trials. Myself, my aunt Kathleen and friend Jennifer, are aiming to walk 26 miles around London. Please help us to raise as much money as possible to help improve outcomes and treatments for as many as possible, hopefully one day we will no longer live in fear of Cancer!
