Story
What’s the hardest thing you ever had to give up? Was it jogging because of knee pain? Or milk because of a new diet? Biting your nails? Whatever it was, you know the first days are the hardest – and sustaining it long term isn’t easy either. The Business Beats Cancer Edinburgh Board (and friends) is raising funds during the Take on Twenty challenge by giving up all drinks other than water for 20 days in September. The idea behind Take on Twenty is that board members can experience what it’s like to suddenly have to change a habitual part of their lives. This will offer a tiny window into the lives of cancer patients whose daily routines are often turned upside down as they undergo treatment. Supported by Scottish Water, board members will substitute caffeinated, sugary and boozy drinks with Scotland’s precious natural resource, our tap water. This initiative highlights the health benefits of small lifestyle changes as diets lower in sugar, salt and alcohol lead to healthier and more balanced lives and can reduce risk of some types of cancer. The money raised by Take on Twenty will fund life-saving research that make treatments kinder and less disruptive to those diagnosed with cancer in future. This is especially important given that the novel coronavirus outbreak slowed down research and postponed clinical trials. In the past few months alone, research funding decreased by the same amount that Cancer Research UK spends on clinical trials in an entire decade. Our board members know that there is nothing more rewarding than making a difference. So, we urge you to take part in Take on Twenty. You can support the challenge by donating HERE. Alternatively, you can join our cause by drinking water for twenty days – and raise some valuable funds at the same time. *If you suffer any mental or physical illness which might be affected significantly by undertaking this challenge, please consult with your health practitioner prior to commencing this challenge.
