Story
In October 2010, my dad (Tom's grandad) was diagnosed with bowel cancer. He wouldn't have known had he not sent off a random stool sample. To say we were shocked that it actually lead to him being diagnosed with cancer would be an understatement. To see him go through his treatment was traumatic and upsetting, but he's a survivor. Just this month he went for an endoscopy & was finally given the news we wanted to hear...he didn't need to return to hospital for another 3 years. Two years ago I attended my regular smear test, I was told I had abnormal cells which needed to be treated...again this month, I've been told that I don't need to have a smear for another 3 years. These are the success stories, however I've also known very dear family who have succumbed to this horrific disease very recently. Just this year, Evie's great-grandad passed away after a long term illness with cancer. It was an aggressive form, but boy, was he strong throughout. Two years ago, Evie's other great-grandad lost the fight. It is for my dad & the memory of my step-children's great-grandparents who sadly passed away, that we'd like to take part in this event. Three to four years ago, I'd never have even considered doing this, as I was severely obese in weight. Having now lost over 7 stone, I want to & can do this. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
