A Journey of Strength, Loss, and Hope – Please Help Me Give Back Life can change in an instant. Not long ago, I suffered an acute right thalamic stroke that left me with weakness down my left side. I had to relearn how to move, how to balance, how to walk—things we often take for granted. It was one of the hardest challenges of my life. But thanks to the incredible research into how the brain works, alongside relentless determination and support, I’ve been able to rebuild my life step by step. I’m here today because of that progress. Because of research. Because people cared enough to make a difference. And this isn’t the only way research has shaped my life. Cancer research gave me something priceless—more time with my mum. She passed away in May last year, but because of the advances in treatment, I got longer with her than we might have otherwise had. That time is something I will carry with me forever. My mum raised me to believe in doing good wherever you can—that if you have the opportunity to change the direction of someone’s life, you should take it. This is me trying to live by her words. Cancer is still a part of my life today. My dad is living with cancer, supported by treatments made possible through years of research. And I carry the BRCA2 gene, which increases my own risk in the future. But because of ongoing research, I’m able to have regular monitoring and tests—something that gives me reassurance and hope. Cancer doesn’t care who you are. It doesn’t care about your age, where you’re from, or even which football team you support. That’s why I’m reaching out—especially to the football community. Whether it’s the price of a pint (£5) or more, every single donation makes a difference.
