My Story

Here's my story (most of you know about this) and why you should donate if you can... TEN YEARS AGO (!!) In January 2008 I saw there was a 5k 'race' in Portsmouth and thought I would take part to give me some motivation to get fitter. It's seems strange to think now that just a few weeks after entering I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma and that I would need to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. What was that all about - a bit of a shock I can tell you!! Treatment started on 21st February 2008 and continued until end of June 2008. Race for Life that year was in June, pretty much the beginning of my radiotherapy treatment but I still decided to take part because I wanted to do something for me and to raise money to help others the way I had been helped. It was such an emotional day just to see so many people there for the same reason and all doing their bit to raise money. That year I just walked round but I think I had a good excuse, although I did do a little jog over the start and finish lines...! Since then I have taken part in Race for Life every year and this will be my eleventh one so I feel it's quite an achievement. I've completed it alone and with friends and family, but it so much better to do it with others so Barkies Heroes is now in it's 6th year. I'm not one for shouting about what I went through but happy to share my story with anyone that wants to listen. I'm just glad to say the NHS did a great job and I have been in remission since October 2008 (I don't think they say cured anymore just in case!) Quite often I wonder to myself - did I really go through all of that? The answer - Yes I did, with the help from my amazing family and friends and special mention to Stu who was and still is with me every step of the way xx Hopefully reading this will give you some inspiration to join our team or part with some money and donate to Cancer Research. It's really important they are able to carry out trials to find new ways of beating this disease - let's help them and I would be really grateful if you would donate! Thanks for reading until the end... Wend XXX
