My Story
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. I’m going to do 100 push ups a day in November to help raise money for Cancer Research UK. Myself and fellow school colleagues are taking part in this challenge . Due to it affecting us in so many ways and personally having to live with an incurable advanced Bowel cancer . We remain always positive and aim to beat cancer. “Active body , healthy mind”. At the end of 2018, I began noticing that my bowel movements were more regular, I was feeling much more fatigued , lost my appetite and I was experiencing blood in my poo. I threw myself into teaching PE and put off seeing my GP for 6 months , during which time the blood in my poo was increasing. In 2019 I went to my GP and was sent for a colonoscopy 2 days later after which I and my wife Mary were told I had stage 3 bowel cancer. It was an almighty shock , particularly as I had always been very fit and active and still felt this way. I continued teaching while receiving the first rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. They wanted me to go to surgery at the beginning of June but I was determined to walk my oldest daughter down the aisle on 1st June , so they delayed it until after the special day. Following surgery for an ultra - low anterior resection with a temporary ileostomy , I spent 3 weeks in hospital and literally had to learn to walk again , which was a massive shock to the system as I had always been fit and active. I received post chemotherapy for 3 months following the surgery and returned to school in September continued to have regular scans to keep an eye on my condition. In early 2020 , it was discovered that the cancer had spread to my liver and was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and had to take time off work for a liver resection . My stoma reversal was booked in for 19th March 2020, however the day before they rang me to say due to Covid 19 they had to cancel all non - urgent operations. During lockdown I was urged to stay at home as I was clinically vulnerable but it did give me a chance to record my weekly PE podcasts. However in June I had the stoma reversed . I was nominated for the Sussex Teacher of the Year Awards at this time and was delighted I had won Sport Teacher for Eastbourne District and Overall Sport Teacher for Sussex . To this day , I continue to receive regular blood tests and CT scans as recently they have shown nodules on my lungs , should they grow I will receive further treatment knowing that it is incurable. Please show your support in any way you can and help fund life-saving research by donating to my page. Thank you
