My Story
I wanted to walk Coast to Coast for Cancer Research. Inexplicably, and yet happily, I’m planning to go much, much further. I am walking for John Walker, 1971-2022, who passed away only 7 months after a diagnosis of metastatic bowel cancer; I will walk with a notebook, and I will write as I walk. I am walking for John's partner David, and for his parents Bill and Val and his sisters Emma, Luisa, and Dani. I am walking for Sally-Anne and for Jane, both living with metastatic breast cancer, and their families. I am walking for Chris, whose treatment is experimental now that the NHS treatment has stopped working, and for Carolyn and Scott and the rest of his family. I am walking for Marc. I am walking for myself and my parents, who loved and continue to love those named. I am walking for earlier diagnosis, so that cancers can be treated, and don't have to be lived with. I am walking for my grandad, and for Gary and Dan and Trev and Suzanne and so many more, who have been treated and are in remission. I am walking because I have the opportunity to; because these amazing people and their stories are proof that we need to do what we want to do now. Don't wait for the right time, or put a single thing off. If you have always fancied a long-distance path, let me know - walk with me, for some or all of the challenges I have planned, or suggest another for us to tackle together. The plans are on the website (https://hikingintheirhonou.wixsite.com/whowillyouhikefor), the Facebook page and the Instagram page. Let's walk all over cancer. Let's raise awareness, and funds. You can join the team and do your own fundraising through this platform, and you can choose your cause within the Cancer Research UK Giving system - from a specific type of cancer to a specific area of research such as prevention, treatment development, or childhood cancers. 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime. Breast, prostate, lung and bowel cancers together accounted for over half (53%) of all new cancer cases in the UK in 2016-2018 and for almost half (45%) of all cancer deaths in the UK in 2017-2019. If cancer is detected at an early stage, before symptoms even appear, it is easier to treat and there is a better chance of survival. Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I’m fundraising right now for Cancer Research UK. There’s no time to lose! Donate to my page today and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
