My Story

Thank you for visiting this page in memory of Vince Lewis who passed away in July 2019, long before his time, at the age of 56. Vince was a loveable character, who brought joy to his family and everyone he met. Sadly, at the age of 54 Vince was diagnosed with a large tumour in his oesophagus after having some difficulty swallowing his food. Vince fought the fight and accepted everything that the doctors and experts threw at him - be that radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and one of the biggest operations on the human body known as an Ivor-Lewis oesophagectamy, to remove his oesophagus. Although this surgery in February 2018 was horrendous, and completely life changing, Vince was recovering well or so we thought, until he started to feel unwell in March 2019. Shortly after, Vince was diagnosed with advanced terminal cancer that had spread to his lung, adrenal gland, liver, spleen, and lymphatic system. Even with a terminal diagnosis Vince was willing to keep fighting and opted for further chemotherapy to maximise his time with his family and cherished grand daughters. Sadly, Vince was rushed into hospital with breathing difficulties the night before his chemo was due to start. Vince kept fighting in hospital for 5 and a half weeks until sadly, he passed away with his family at his side, due to respiratory complications generated by an anastomotic leak at the site of his previous surgery. Vince was the best father, grandfather and husband that anyone could have asked for, and he was so so loved. Before he died, Vince did not know if he had opted for the best course of treatment. Oesophageal cancer is the fastest rising cancer in the western world and yet it is also one of the least treatable. This is in part, because it usually presents itself with a blockage of the food pipe, and so by the time it is noticed, it has already spread quite far. Many more cancers have had much more investment and research and better treatment options have been developed. Vince's wish was for treatments for this horrendous cancer to be improved, and for more research to be conducted into the causes, so that less people have to endure the hell that he went through. Rest in peace dad, we love you to the moon and back. Rhys, Janet, Leanne, Jessica and Zoe xxxxx
