----------------------------UPDATE 12th July 2017------------------------ We did it! It was hotter than ideal, and we had to fix four punctures (all Ali's!) but we all made it round. It was beautiful and painful in equal measure but the fact that we were raising so much money due to everyone's incredible generosity kept us going up the hills and across the gravel! The money raised will make such a difference to the fight to find better treatments for lung cancer and many people who find themselves in the same position as Tess in the future will benefit as a result. We've been overwhelmed by the support and messages. - We're now a team of three as Simon Beston will be riding with us too! - Ali and Owain are now going to ride the 100 mile route (rather than 100km) in order to go up White Horse Hill as originally planned. In December 2015, Tess was diagnosed with lung cancer. Six months later, despite the expertise of numerous medical staff, the love and care of family and friends and an undying determination to stay alive as long as possible for her young family, Tess died, leaving four children without a mummy. Lung cancer treatments are improving rapidly thanks to research funded by Cancer Research UK. However, Tess's story (as well as that of many other people each year) shows that there is still lots more crucial work to be done. Tess was passionately committed to medical research and would have taken part in a cancer treatment trial herself had she been well enough to be allowed to enroll. Owain (Tess's husband) and Ali (one of her close friends) are completing this challenging cycle ride, which goes past White Horse Hill, one of the family's favourite places and the site where Tess's ashes are scattered, to raise money to help improve the prospects for lung cancer patients in the future. The White roads classic is a 100km ride modelled on the Italian one-day Classic known as the Strade Bianche – a race held annually in the hills of Tuscany in early Spring. It features 40km of old white gravel roads or ‘strade bianche’ or ‘sterrati‘, which are not for the faint hearted on a road bike. It will be a real challenge for both of us!
