My Story
As some of you will know, I lost my mum in 2013 to Ovarian Cancer. She had the BRCA1 gene. a mutuation which means a higher risk of developing a number of different cancers. Mum fought really hard for 2 years before losing her battle. She even made it into remission for a couple of weeks before it came back. Watching my mum go through all the pain of treatment, the after-treatment, the pain and eventually watching her fade away was utterly heartbreaking. I was grieving even before she had passed. She was 54 years old. I can honestly say it was the toughest time of my life. Among the family members I have lost to cancer is my mum's father (lung cancer) and my dad's mum (bowel cancer). Now my uncle is terminally ill with pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed in 2020, endured chemotherapy with the hopeful outcome to be longevity and top-up chemo sessions to manage it. He has had a break for a couple of months from chemo and had an appointment with his consultant recently where they advised the cancer has spread and there was no more they can do for him. I am going to shave my head and want to donate as much of the length of my hair as possible (it currently measures approximately 42cm (17in.). The date for the shave is 1st October 2021. Please, please, please donate so we can work to find a cure. Invest in your future and the future of those you love. I want a future without cancer.
