Sophie's Race for Life

Cancer research has always been one of the charities I’ve tried to support when I can - Cancer has affected my family and friends in the past. I have wanted to do a pretty muddy race since we found out about them, and now I'm old enough we were always planning to look at one this year. But towards the end of 2017 we found out more about how cancer works, how cancer affects people, when my nan found out she had cancer. A routine test, a tiny tumour miraculously found, initially looking like it would be fairly simple. More tests found additional cancer, with the tiny initial tumour shedding cells to spread as fast as it could, trying to do as much damage as it could. My nan got the all clear early this year, two months from diagnosis. We are extremely lucky. The initial test, early detection, fast responses, the way the team have looked after her, everything. The next day I found out my best friends mum had been diagnosed with cancer. Several other family members have had cancer in the past. But they worked through it. Not everyone can work through it though. The tests in place now, the teams in place now mean that there is so much more help, so much more that can be done when cancer strikes. My mum and I will scramble around on our pretty muddy course. We’ll have fun doing it too. But we will never ever forget why we are doing it. Why the races are put on. Why people sign up and volunteer at them every year. What the money raised goes towards. Beating cancer Saving lives. Helping to support people. Helping people to fight. Helping people to face their fears and the challenges in front of them. We will run, walk and climb over obstacles on a course. People out there have other obstacles to climb. They are our heroes.
