Silly Hat for Matt Challenge

Wed 1 Aug 2018 - Sun 18 Nov 2018

Raising funds and awareness of stomach cancer... in silly hats

In memory of

Matt Simpson

My Story

Welcome to our Silly Hat for Matt Challenge Page! (UPDATED with a second challenge and a new challenger - Andy's signed up for the mayhem too!) On 2nd September, we'll be taking part in the Nuts Challenge - an extreme and very muddy 7K obstacle race to raise funds exclusively for research into stomach cancer. One lap sounded like tricky but fun. Two laps sounded a bit more crazy, so that's what we've decided to do. We'll be battling 14K of non-stop obstacles to wade through, climb up, over and under. In case that's not enough, we've also signed up for the Hurtleberry on 16th September - a duathlon; 15K trail running and 20K mountain bike riding in the hills. (Andy's never done a trail run event before and Cindy's barely ridden a mountain bike, let alone any challenging trails, so we'll both be earning our stripes with this one). Please do sponsor and/or join us(!), but first let us tell you why and what this is all about. About Silly Hat for Matt The #sillyhatformatt campaign has been set up to raise urgently-needed funds and awareness for stomach cancer, in memory of our much-loved and missed friend, Matt Simpson. Why? Cancer research has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, but stomach cancer is one of the lesser funded and least understood. Survival rates are often shockingly low and through this challenge, we're doing what we can to change that. Who's Matt? For those of you that didn't know him, Matt loved life. He was easy-going, supportive, always up for a laugh and a brilliant godfather to our son, Felix. He was fit and healthy. Then, all of a sudden, he wasn't. Matt was diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer (linitis plastica) in October 2012. With an average survival rate of months rather than years, Matt passed away little over a year later, in November 2013. He was just 40 years old, leaving behind his wife and young family; Trine, Daniel and Oliver. Creating Change Inspired by Matt's willingness to do anything to help out his friends and his penchant for silly hats, the #sillyhatformatt challenge will raise much needed funds for stomach cancer research, with challenge events taking place in the UK and Australia. What YOU Can Do If you're able to donate, that would be amazing and it would certainly inspire us to make it through both challenges. Donating through this page is simple, fast and secure. All funds will be allocated exclusively to stomach cancer research. Of course, you could also don a silly hat, sign up for your own challenge and join our team (see the group fundraising page). Thank you in advance for anything you can do.
