I am proud to be doing Race For Life as part of Heather's Mates team - for my indomitable Calendar colleague and pal Heather Clark who is currently being treated for & living with ovarian cancer.
But this year, RFL is more important and relevant to me as between August and Dec last year, I had my own brush with cancer.
On 1st August - appropriately Yorkshire Day and while holidaying in America - I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. There are different types and thankfully mine was `one of the best cancers to have' (now that's a bizare phrase to digest) and one of the most treatable with a very high cure rate.
After NHS surgery and further treatment, I was given the all clear six days before Christmas. Apart from a turkey neck, I am back to my old self!
I have been very lucky and I know that, trust me. However, with over one in two of us expected to get cancer in our lifetime, research is more vital than ever.
So when I trot around the RFL route on June 4, each step will be for those loved ones I have lost through cancer, but it is also for my cherished ones who are living with cancer today.
