Walking Marathon

Sun, 23 Apr 2023 - Sat, 15 Jul 2023

My aim is to Raise £1,000 in memory of my sister Ùna McBride by walking a half marathon over 12 weeks ending on 15th July, the anniversary of Ùna's passing in 2016.

In memory of

My courageous, caring, visionary sister Ùna who raised a Sparkle for the lives she touched.

8th Apr 1955 - 15th Jul 2016

My Story

I have had severe epilepsy since aged 12 years caused by an accident when I was hit by a cricket ball. This affected my speech and general cognition. I had a dream of running the London Marathon and after 10 years of unsuccessful applications I was finally accepted. in 1995 I succeeded in completing the London Marathon with a lot of support from my sister Ùna, mum and my dad and raised £1500 for Epilepsy Action. Sadly in 2015 I fell onto concrete following a tonic seizure which resulted in a brain haematoma and semi paralysis down my left side. I was five months in Northern General receiving Neurorehabilitation.A year after my accident in 2015 my dearest Sister Ùna passed away from Bowel cancer. Two weeks before she passed away she was awarded Merseyside Woman of Courage for her dedication to fundraising and for caring for my mother and for me. It took 5 more years of physio and support with the bereavement before I was able to walk with confidence using my walker. With the support of my physiotherapist Esther Turner and my team of Personal Assistants I have been able to rebuild my confidence and stamina to walk again with the aid of my walker. Inspired by Capt. Tom MooreI had a dream to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research by walking a half marathon over twelve weeks, in the corridors of my block of apartments. I achieved that in 6 weeks! Now I am going for a full marathon to finish on 15th July 2023.
