Saranjit's Race for Life

Cancer doesn’t just change the lives of those who suffer with it. It’s changed my life too. I’ve seen the suffering too many times now and I want to do something to try to stop it, to make the treatment easier and less invasive, to raise awareness of the symptoms so cancer can be detected earlier, to help find cures and more effective medication. To stop other loved ones suffering. I can’t do that alone which is why I’m asking for your support. I took up running in October 2017. I didn’t have a race or charity event in mind. It was purely selfish. I wanted to get fitter and be healthier. I was satisfied with running for 15-20 minutes. By February 2018, as usual, boredom set in and I was loosing motivation. A good friend (and avid runner), said I needed a challenge, some sort of target to keep me going. Before I knew it she’d signed us both up to do the 10km Race for Life. I didn’t take it too seriously. I initially thought I could run a bit, walk a bit - it’ll be a bit of fun. It’s a cancer charity, a charity close to my heart. I’ll see how it goes....But the motivation worked. I found myself training harder and longer and now I really want to do well in this race. I will be running the whole 10km. I’ve realised now how incredible the human body is and how important it is to take the time out to exercise. What’s that got to do with cancer you say?? Well nothing really, but I figured if I have this new found ability why not use it to do some good. Those that know me well know I’ve recently lost an aunt to bowel cancer and a good friend to prostate cancer. Both were taken far too young. Another friend (not much older than I am) is going through treatment for breast cancer right now. Others I know have either been through treatment or are currently going through it. It’s scaring me. We all have different abilities. Some can find the cure for cancer and I’ve discovered I can run (quite a lot if I really push myself). So, I’m using my new found skill to fundraise for those that CAN find the cure for cancer.
