My Story

This is our Mum/Nan who was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue and throat in March 2018. Less than a month later she had a major operation (18 hours) to remove the tumour and reconstruct as much of her tongue and throat as the surgeons were able to. Mum knew that the likelihood was that she would need speech therapy in order to speak and swallow again. Mum had 8 weeks in the Churchill Hospital recuperating, during that time Mum was fitted with a tube and pump which fed liquid food directly in to her stomach. Mum then had 6 weeks of radiotherapy – another major hurdle for her to overcome, which she did. This meant another 6 weeks of recuperation in hospital. The staff were totally amazing, I cannot praise them highly enough! We are hugely thankful that Mum is now cancer free and is able to speak but is coming to terms with the fact that she may never swallow again and so remains fed via a tube direct in to her stomach. This means that her life is very different now and Mum is learning to navigate her way through what that means for her. We are doing the ‘Race For Life’ for all those who have to face cancer in the future, we hope that no-one would have to endure what Mum has had to, and that if it is diagnosed and operated on earlier, the chances of complete recovery will be increased. Every single one of the NHS, Sue Ryder and Macmillan staff have been amazing before, during and after her treatment. They have all been loving, supportive and compassionate. We are particularly grateful for all of the work that Macmillan do, without them Mum’s experience could have been very different. From day one, Mum has been so strong, brave and gracious, a true inspiration to anyone who faces cancer. Mum has strong faith and has felt God’s presence and provision throughout. So, this is for you Mum and anyone else who may have to face a similar journey. We love you so much and are extremely proud of you. Stay strong x Any donations would be appreciated, however big or small. Many thanks, Heather and Sarah
