In January 2019 my family and I heard the words that you never want to hear. Those of you that didn’t know I spent 2019 fighting thyroid cancer. I had major surgery, this was not only total removal of the thyroid but the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes and I required a full neck disection. The procedure was a lengthy one during which a large amount of lymph nodes were removed. This was followed by a period of isolation in hospital where I received radio-iodine treatment to zap the remaining cancer. Although I have to undergo constant regular surveillance for life, things are looking good. I was supposed to run the London Marathon in April 2020, I was over half way through the training when the COVID pandemic struck. I started training again when there was a glimmer of hope that the Marathon could go ahead in October 2020, again COVID had other ideas. I will not let this stop me. Running the London Marathon has always been a dream of mine and I am keeping everything crossed for third time lucky. I have been overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity so far, however COVID has hit charities hard and donations are needed more than ever. We are now told one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our life time. I am proof that cancer can happen to anyone, we all witness cancer devastating far too many families. This is something my family and I have recently witnessed first hand. In June 2021 we lost a very close family member and good friend. Ste lost his battle with cancer aged 37. His wife Emily and their two children Lewis and Olivia were by his side every step of the way. Seeing the people you love the most hurt is indescribable.
