Our Family Challenge - the next chapter…

My Story

From recovery room to running the London Marathon - I still can’t quite believe I’m actually going to do it ! My name’s Sarah Ransome and a little under a year ago I watched my amazing family undertake a multiple marathon challenge to raise money for Cancer Research. I was on hand to help hand out gels and drinks - but was fed up I couldn’t do any running myself, because at the time I was still recovering from another operation following my Breast Cancer treatment a few years earlier. As you can imagine, Cancer Research UK is a charity close to all our hearts. I thought I’d taken one for the team with my own diagnosis, but just 2 years ago our gorgeous daughter was given similar, world shattering news. Becky was in her mid twenties - It’s not genetic and just shows how indiscriminate this disease can be. We’re both incredibly lucky to have responded well to treatments - we were able to benefit from the scientific strides CRUK helps fund. So we wanted to give something back. My fabulous husband Dave, & amazing Son,Jamie both ran three marathons, in three consecutive weekends in three different countries. Just a few months out of treatment, Becky did the miles at home because she couldn’t get the time off work. Now it’s my turn. For months I’ve been quietly pounding the streets and lanes to get ready for the next chapter in the family challenge. I’d done a bit of running before but nothing that would prepare me for a marathon… so this challenge has really tested my legs and my resolve ! The 26 miles and 385 yards of the iconic London Marathon will be tough - but what’s harder is hearing the words ‘I’m afraid it’s Cancer” so I WILL get round. Too many friends, family and colleagues are having to come to terms with joining the club, no one wants to be a member of … As a family we try and find the positive - and I know how lucky we’ve been to benefit from the science and technical advances in the Cancer Research field but it’s expensive, so in some small way, I’m trying to help raise much needed funds for more research and trials. I know the squeeze on the back pocket is very tight right now and spare cash is at a premium.. so bearing that in mind, many of you know how much I love coffee and cake or a G and T - perhaps you’d consider donating the cost of that and think of me as I pull on my trainers on October 2nd. Thanks for getting this far .. your support means the world to me. I’ll keep you posted !
