Are we there yet? Walking the Shine marathon for my Mum
In memory of
Margaret Mann
I’m walking the Shine Marathon this year in memory of my Mum who died last year from lung cancer. Lung cancer has such a high mortality rate because it’s usually symptomless until it’s advanced. By the time of her diagnosis in January the cancer had already spread to her liver, bones, brain and lymph nodes. This meant we knew she wasn’t going to beat cancer and that hit us all hard. Thanks to the hard work by organisations like cancer research, Mum was able to start a new form of targeted therapy that gave her 5 more months with us. That might not seem a lot, but in those 5 months she got to hear her grandchildren say their first words and see them take their first steps. I will be forever grateful for that. The Drs, Nurses, Scientists and Researchers work tirelessly without much in return, to help families like mine. The Dr who sat us in a room during mum’s last week with us and told us the treatments had run their course left the hospital that night and went off to study at evening classes before he started another 12 hour shift the next day. I’m knackered if I have a busy day invoicing 😄. They are selfless, sensitive and so so comforting and they deserve every penny we can give to help them look after our families when the time comes. Mum died 5 days before my daughter’s first birthday. I miss her every hour of every day and no amount of miles walked would ever do justice to the incredible woman she was. xx Each year Cancer Research UK’s scientists get closer to beating cancer, and they’ve helped double survival rates in the last 40 years. But we can’t stop there. Only with our continued support can they turn this research into breakthroughs that save millions of lives.
