So I'm not exactly the athletic type, but over the last few years, Cancer has gotten pretty personal. A good friend of mine decided to do Race for Life in loving memory of her Mother-in-law, who lost her battle with Cancer in January. She reached out to her friends asking us to be by her side and support her...how could I refuse? This is the first sponsored event I have been involved with since I was a child and I'm excited and nervous in equal measure. Sometimes it can feel like every week someone is asking for sponsorship for something. So I'm not going to beg. If you can give even £1 to support me, then I will be so grateful. If you can't give anything, then your kind words and support will help me. Cancer has taken away our school friends, uni friends, work colleagues, family friends, close friends, partners, siblings, parents, children, grandparents, cousins, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, even our pets. It has affected every single person I know in one way or another - that's what I mean about Cancer getting personal. It sometimes feels to me like Cancer's walls are closing in. I've seen Cancer take a school friend in the prime of her life. It took a colleague's young daughter before her life had barely begun. Cancer even tried to take on my Mum, but she battled bravely and is one of the lucky ones. A close friend has just beaten it too but now it's after one of my cousins and one of James' close friends. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
