My Story
I was absolutely gobsmacked to see the latest statistic that 1 in 2 of us will get cancer at some stage in our lives. In the 1970s, less than a quarter of people with cancer survived. But over the last 40 years, survival has doubled and today half will survive! I’ve chosen to run in aid of Cancer Research UK as unfortunately cancer has effected myself and my loved ones many times over the years, and again more recently. I am running for a survivor and for a fighter! As some of you may know, in December 2020 my beautiful Mam was diagnosed with breast cancer. She bravely opted for a double mastectomy in January 2021 and absolutely owned it! On the 19th February 2021, after lots of hoping, praying and waiting while her cells were sent over to America, we were finally told that the operation was a success, she was cancer free and didn’t need chemo! Our lives tipped upside down and back up again within 3 months! As expected, she is absolutely smashing her physio and has amazed us with her resilience, attitude and speedy recovery! My mam is a cancer survivor and I can’t wait to run in celebration of her journey! I’m also running in support of a fighter, whom I have had the absolute pleasure of knowing since becoming his daughters’ best friend many moons ago! Again in December 2020, just days after the news about my mam, I received the devastating message that David had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. My heart absolutely shattered all over again! How could this be happening to such an amazing family?! My best friend was due her first born in a matter of days, how on earth will they get through this? Oh how daft I was to even ask such a question?! 3 months on, David is smashing his chemo like we knew he would, baby Alba is the absolute apple of his eye and Julie, Tasha, Craig and Lauren continue to be just amazing as always! David, keep going, you’ve got this!
