My Story
I’m walking in memory of my Mam, Christine. She lost her battle to breast cancer in the early hours of 2nd January 2018, aged just 58. I walked the Shine Night Walk for the first time in 2018 and it was such a great experience, I signed up for 2019 the following day! In November 2017 Mam received a terminal diagnosis and was told she was likely to have 2 years left, as it turned out she had just 2 months. She caught a cold which quickly worsened and developed into pneumonia- she just wasn’t strong enough to fight it off. I’m only glad that she managed to come home on Boxing Day 2017 for a few precious hours to spend time with her children, grandchildren, brother and her Dad. On her final day - New Year’s Day 2018 she was visited in the hospital by many friends and family before passing away in the early hours of the 2nd surrounded by close family. I’m hoping that the funds raised will go towards more research into effective treatments and maybe even cures for breast cancer. This disease appears to run in the family as not only my Mam contracted it but also three of her cousins too. One lost her battle in 2016, and she was in her 40s. The other two continue to bravely fight on. Here’s to hoping that my Mams three grandaughters don’t have to face this same battle in years to come, but if they do there will be effective treatments they can rely upon due to the fabulous work Cancer Research are doing. Each year Cancer Research UK’s scientists get closer to beating cancer, and they’ve helped double survival rates in the last 40 years. But we can’t stop there. Only with our continued support can they turn this research into breakthroughs that save millions of lives.
