My Story

NL volgt Engels Did you know that one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime? One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Many of us have lost loved ones to this disease or are currently supporting them through their battle. Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is a charity organisation dedicated to supporting lifesaving research, serving as a source of accurate and up-to-date information, and contributing to education and prevention. CRUK plays a vital role in supporting healthcare professionals (doctors and nurses) and a community of around 4,000 scientists, including me. Throughout my PhD (DPhil) and postdoctoral studies, CRUK has supported our research into epigenetics. Whilst our work is mostly fundamental, the proteins and enzymes we investigate have potential therapeutic implications in cancers such as leukaemia, prostate, breast, and melanoma, among others. Now, it’s my turn to give back by running for a good cause. I will participate in the Great North Run on September 8th, the largest half marathon in the world by number of participants, as a sponsored run for CRUK. Am I going to make it? You bet 😉! I finished my first few ‘trial’ runs and aim to improve my time for the big event. Any donation, whether big or small, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Wist je dat één op de twee mensen in Nederland een diagnose voor kanker krijgt in zijn of haar leven? Velen van ons hebben dierbaren aan deze ziekte verloren of helpen hun in de strijd tegen kanker. Een van de organisaties die zich sterk maakt voor de strijd tegen kanker is Cancer Research UK (CRUK), dit is de Britse zusterorganisatie van KWF Kankerbestrijding. CRUK zet zich in voor baanbrekend kankeronderzoek, fungeert als een betrouwbare bron van up-to-date informatie en draagt bij aan voorlichting en preventie. In hun onderzoek steunt CRUK artsen, verpleegkundigen en zo'n 4000 wetenschappers, waarvan ik er één ben. Ze hebben mijn werk, zowel tijdens mijn promotieonderzoek als mijn postdoctorale onderzoek naar epigenetica, financieel ondersteund. Ons onderzoek is van fundamentele aard, maar bepaalde eiwitten en enzymen die wij onderzoeken kunnen mogelijk therapeutisch worden ingezet tegen kankers zoals leukemie, prostaat-, borst-, huid- en andere vormen van kanker. Op zondag 8 september 2024 loop ik als sponsor voor CRUK mee met de ‘Great North Run’, de grootste halve marathon ter wereld naar het aantal deelnemers. Ga ik het redden? Tuurlijk! Ik heb mijn eerste ‘proef’ halve marathon al gelopen. Elke donatie, hoe klein of groot, wordt enorm gewaardeerd (ongeacht de valuta). Bedankt voor je steun!
