I'm cycling at least 500 miles this September for Cancer Research UK

My Story

Thank you for visiting my Cancer Research UK Cycle 300 page. It has been said many times by so many people, but 2020 really has been an unprecedented year with the entire world being impacted by COVID-19. One area that has been severely affected is that of charity donations. Cancer Research UK have just announced that they have made the very difficult decision to reduce their workforce by 500 over the coming months, almost a quarter of their staff. This news follows their recent announcement that they will be cutting £44m of their research funding as a result of reduced donations during the Pandemic. In order to help in some small way, I will be taking part in the Cancer Research UK Cycle 300 event throughout September. Although the challenge is to cycle 300 miles during the month, I am aiming to go beyond this and complete a minimum of 500 miles. Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another and the over the past 18 months, this awful disease has impacted me personally and my close family. In February 2019, my sister was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Fortunately, following surgery and radiotherapy, she has made a full recovery. Just a month later in March 2019, I was diagnosed with skin cancer and following a small operation I was given the all clear. Then, in January this year, my wife Gill was also diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The treatment plan is well underway and Gill has just completed six months of chemotherapy. This will be followed by surgery in September and Radiotherapy in October. The prognosis is good and we are feeling optimistic that there will be a positive outcome and Gill will make a full recovery. Without all the great work carried out by Cancer Research UK, it is highly likely that the outcome of these three cases may not have been so positive. With 50% of the UK population likely to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives we all need to do our bit to find a cure. I will be cycling every day, rain or shine, throughout September and aiming to raise as much money as possible for this great cause. If you are able to sponsor me, it will make it all worthwhile and the money I raise will go some way to plug the gap in donations that occurred as a result of COVID. Whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated by both me and Cancer Research UK.
