Blue Square Hike for Cancer

Thu 30 May 2019 - Tue 30 Jul 2019

My Story

I'm at it again. This time for a different, but also just as important cause. Most people know about my passion for the environment, but recently I've focused my attention on how the meat industry is destroying our planet. Without even realising it, I discovered the damaging effects it has on our bodies as well. I recently read - Eating Animals, Should We Stop? - something that's stuck with me. Paediatrician are seeing all kinds of illnesses that they never used to see. Not only juvenile diabetes, but inflammatory and autoimmune diseases that a lot of the doctors don’t even know what to call. And girls are going through puberty much earlier, and kids are allergic to just about everything, asthma is out of control and sadly cancer is on the rise. Everyone knows it’s our food that's causing these problems. We’re messing with the genes of these animals then feeding them growth hormones and all kinds of drugs that we really don’t know enough about. And then we’re eating them. Kids today are the first generation to grow up on this stuff, and we’re making a science experiment out of them. Isn’t it strange how upset people get about a few dozen baseball players taking growth hormones, when we’re doing what we’re doing to our food and feeding them to our children? There’s now a large body of evidence that bowel cancer is more common among people who eat red and processed meat. The results showed that people who ate the most processed meat had around a 17% higher risk of developing bowel cancer, compared to those who ate the least - Scienceblog, Cancer Research UK 2015 if you don't believe me. One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Cancer doesn't care who you are, what plans you have, what your dreams are. I want to raise money so people can carry on with their lives, get treatment and support they deserve and not let cancer take away everything from them. So, this year Blue Square have chosen to support Cancer Research UK. To help Cancer Research gain more data and insight into this growing concern and educate others on what they're shoving down their throats, I'm walking along the Norfolk coast to raise money to help fight a horrendous disease. If we’re going to talk about cancer and try and beat it, we have to talk about what’s causing it. Unfortunately, it’s in our food and without proper education and having an awareness of what’s right for our bodies, the statics are only going to get worse for future generations. If just 20 of my friends and family pitch in £5, instead of spending it down the pub, I'll hit my target.
