Race for Life 5k - Sunday 14th May 2017 #mom #nan #lymphoma #letskickass #beatcancersooner

A poem for mom - The C word ?

On 8th July last year I noticed my mom was very sick,

I took her to the hospital and thought she’d be in and out quite quick,

It came as a surprise when they told me they were keeping her in for the night,

I didn’t like leaving her there but thought at least tomorrow she’ll be alright,

One night turned into a few while they were doing scans and tests,

While me, mom and our family were all hoping for the best,

On 14th July my brother broke the news I was dreading to hear,

“Beck, they’ve found a tumour but don’t worry it might not be sever”

I can’t explain the feeling, as my eyes filled water,

I knew I had to be brave for mom, I’m her only daughter,

On 15th July mom called to say they were taking her for an operation,

We all raced to the hospital to see her before they put her under sedation,

When we got to the hospital we could see moms symptoms had got worse,

There were lots of people surrounding her and Doctor, Anaesthetist and Nurse,

We were called in to a side room and were told more upsetting news,

“There’s a 91% chance that on the operating table, her life we might lose”

We walked alongside mom as they wheeled her up to theatre,

I made her promise that she would pull through and told her I’d be there to meet her,

Mom did not cry once nor say that she was scared and frightened,

As they wheeled her through the doors my heart sank and chest tightened,

Hours we sat waiting watching the clock ticking by so slow,

Until my brothers phone rang ..…“quick tell us, we want to know”

He said “She’s out of theatre now and in intensive care recovering”

We were so relieved to hear the news and found it comforting,

We went in to see mom and already she looked so different,

Her skin was back to normal no more of that yellow tint,

The next day when we returned to see her, all we expected to hear was the machines beep,

Until the nurse said “she’s awake and sitting up, we couldn’t keep her asleep”

My mom’s awake and talking, I can’t believe it’s true,

I turned to my family and said “she’s done it for me and you”

In pairs we went in to see her, it was great to see her smile,

I sat there in amazement just staring for a while,

The Surgeon explained what he had done and about the road ahead,

“Don’t thank me now, thank me when you are better” are the exact words he said,

Since the day we were told mom had been diagnosed with Lymphoma,

I’ve read so much about it I should be awarded with a Diploma,

It’s been nearly 8 months since moms operation and she’s been through a lot,

Chemo, infections, hair loss, transplants and I bet there isn’t a medication she’s not got,

We’re nearly there now mom, just one more round of chemo to go,

Then you can live a normal life again, you can’t wait to get back to work we know!

Mom, you amaze me every day with your strength and determination,

There is no one else like you I’m sure, we could search the country and nation,

I’m so grateful that I have the honour of calling you my mother,

I couldn’t write all this of course without mentioning one other,

I know you are determined to see your grandson grow big and strong,

You were there when he took his first breath and have been there all along,

There’s a special bond between you and Jordan that can never be broken,

You are engraved on each other’s hearts like a special loving token,

This poem is not written to make you feel sad and blue,

It’s written with good intentions to say how proud I am of you!

Next week you’ll have a MRI scan and an update on the mass,

Let’s hope and pray we can celebrate that you’ve kicked Cancer in the ass!

Thank you to all our friends and family who have kept us strong along the way,

Your help and support means so much to us, I don’t know what else to say,

I love you mom ? xxxx
