My Story
As some of you may know, July 2015, at 34 years old I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. July 16th is a date I will never forget. We all know that cancer does not discriminate but it was still a massive shock. I first had an operation in which unfortunately had shown that it was no longer a stage 2 but a stage 3. Luckily it had only spread to one lymph node. This meant that I would need chemotherapy. It was tough, I lost my hair, eyebrows, lashes, steroids made me bloat and I lost my independence but I was ready to fight this thing that has selfishly invaded my life. I then had to have a second huge operation to reduce the chance of it coming back. I have now recovered completely from that but I have changed in more ways than one. I have to take pills every day for the next 10 years and will always live with the fear. However, it no longer defines me and I am stronger than I have ever been. As you can imagine that year was horrendous for me and my family, especially my 2 girls who have been my rock throughout this ordeal. At 10 and 7 (then) they shouldn't have had to go through this but they have got me through the treatment and gave me that extra fight. The care I have received throughout has been second to none. 5 months after my operation, me and my 2 girls completed the race for life and this year I will be taking part in Pretty Muddy in June with other ladies from work. This is for the many people affected by cancer, sadly people who have lost their fight, survivors and people still fighting. Events like this are vital in funding Cancer Research UK's life-saving work into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer.
