My Story
This year marks two decades since I embarked on my fundraising journey for Cancer Research, inspired by the untimely passing of my dear cousin Tracie at the age of just 32. In the spirit of the renowned film, Calendar Girls, our company, Serious About Events, initiated a daring "naked" calendar, setting the stage for a series of remarkable challenges over the past 20 years. From conquering Kilimanjaro to trekking Machu Picchu, running marathons in New York and London, cycling from London to Paris, enduring an ice bath challenge, conquering Everest in the Lakes, and skydiving from 15,000 feet—these endeavours have collectively raised a whopping £138,324.45! On 26th May 2024 my husband Simon and 1 are gearing up for our latest challenge: the Ride 100 London-Essex. This event, a legacy of the London 2012 Olympics, retraces the paths of cycling legends like Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, and Chris Froome. However, there's a twist—we must complete the 100-mile route in under eight hours. As someone who prefers solitary cycling to avoid busy roads and crowded scenarios due to fixation issues, this challenge poses a unique test, cycling with thousands of others. Training has commenced in my garage, supplemented by weekly spin classes. Weather permitting, we'll soon venture to the moors for some tough hill climbs between my hosting at our Serious About skittles weekends. The motivation behind these efforts is deeply personal. Cancer has claimed the lives of too many friends and family members. However, the advancements in research have also contributed to the recovery of many. Let's join forces to make a difference in the fight against cancer, honouring the memory of those we've lost and contributing to a brighter future for those currently battling this cruel disease. Your support means the world to us. Together, we can and will make a meaningful difference in the ongoing fight against cancer. Thank you, Rachel x
