My Story

My daughter Pandora, aged 10, decided on a Friday afternoon at school that she wanted to raise money for cancer research. Her inspiration was her Godmother, the wonderful Dr Cathy Roberts who sadly lost her battle with cancer on September 22nd 2018. She is also inspired by her Step-Grandad David Lines, who is living with cancer and her friend Danny who has leukemia, and is a fellow Harry Potter fan and in the words of Pandora, a true Gryffindor. Pandora’s godmother was a truly remarkable person. She was a mother, a doctor, a great friend and a true humanitarian who through her work helped many of the most vulnerable in society, her personal area of passion was the care of refugee and asylum seekers. Cathy treated everyone with compassion, respect and dignity. Cathy also taught Pandora that anyone can make a difference if they are willing to invest some time, energy and effort. And I know Cathy would be immensely proud that Pandora is following in her footsteps with determination. Pandora came up with a plan to make bears to raise money. She has made 30 teddy bears which are going to be used in a variety of ways. Some of her bears are going to be raffled at school, One of her bears will be auctioned and most importantly some of her bears will be donated to children who have been affected by cancer. Starting with Cathys son George and Danny. When a friend, sibling, parent, grandparent or someone important in a child’s life has cancer it changes things; chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery leave your special person tired and feeling unwell. There is a lot of being babysat, being good, being quiet, and missing your special person whilst they have treatment. And for children with cancer life changes dramatically, there is a lot of having to be brave and a lot of having to find ways to have fun from a hospital bed.
