My Story

Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page. The money I raise will help fund life-saving research and to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Why am I raising money for Cancer Research UK? Well they are at the forefront of research into various cancers and because of the COVID Crisis lost about 30% of their income in 2020. There are 165,000 deaths per year in the UK attributable to cancer. Every year until 2020 Cancer Research UK would fund about 10 new clinical trials, in 2020 they were unable to fund any new trials. I am going to be raising money for Cancer Research by riding my bicycle from Lands End to John O'Groats starting on 25th July 2021.The route I have chosen is 1188 miles in length and avoids most main roads. I am funding all of my expenses for the trip therefore everything that is donated goes direct to Cancer Research UK for their outstanding work. My ride is a solo effort and is something that I have wanted to do for sometime now. Doing it and raising money for such a good cause seemed like a good idea therefore if you can spare something to help me raise money for this vital research please donate and help to fight this dreadful illness. Nearly 1 in every 2 of us will suffer from one form or other of cancer in our lives. It was not too long ago that when diagnosed with the disease the only question was "How long have I got?" Now thanks to the work of Cancer Research and other like minded organisations there is a very good chance that one can survive the illness. Even though there are funding shortages the research work does continue. Early detection of cancer is of vital importance and below are three examples of the work of Cancer Research that have come to fruition this year; Personalised treatments can now be accessed quicker than ever before by children and young people in the UK with cancers that have returned - thanks to a Cancer Research UK funded e-Smart trial. Oesophageal cancer can now be detected at an earlier stage thanks to the development of the Cytosponge, a 'sponge on a string' test. It's a simple, quick and affordable test that can be done in a GP surgery and could save lives. As part of the Precision Panc platform, scientists have been developing new ways to predict who will respond to drugs targeting damaged DNA in pancreatic cancer.
