My Story

Thank you for visiting my Fundraising Page. The money I raise will help fund life-saving research and to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Donating through this page is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with Cancer Research UK. The reason why I am doing this is because so many of our friends, members of our family, colleagues and neighbours have been affected by this indiscriminate killer. What am I going to do to earn your donation? I am planning to walk the south west coast long distance footpath – a total distance of 630 mile. It starts in Minehead, Somerset, and passes through North Devon round the coast of Cornwall and finishes in South Haven point in Dorset. It will take me between 6 and 8 weeks to complete. I will be backpacking and camping Monday to Friday and staying in our caravan or similar on Saturday and Sunday. I will be setting off around the 18 July, plan to finish no later than 14 September and hopefully walking a minimum of 15 miles a day. I am aiming to raise £6300. I know this sounds ambitious so any donation will be gratefully received. You can choose to sponsor me £10 for a specific mile – see the attached spreadsheet. This is a massive challenge I have set myself. I am 66 and will be 67 when I finish this, but I feel so fortunate that I can even contemplate doing it at my age. I hope you can all support me and perhaps encourage others to donate for this cause. I am funding all the costs myself so any support is welcome whether it be financial, physical, lodgings, advisory, anything at all. If there is anyone who works for a company that could offer assistance or a donation that would be gratefully accepted. Company during the walk would also be appreciated – let me know if you would like to join me for a day or two! I owe thanks to Jane and Ian at Orchard Physiotherapy in Wrenthorpe - without their treatment I doubt if I could have started the walk. I also owe many thanks and much love to my wife Maureen. Without her love, support and encouragement, I wouldn’t be able to complete this challenge. My Inspiration We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. The people listed below have all suffered through cancer with dignity and resolve and these are my inspiration for this challenge. Sam – as a young boy he was diagnosed with and overcame a brain tumour. Unfortunately, the cancer returned when he was a teenager. After much treatment and the physical toll this took on him, he told his family he did not wish to have any more treatment and passed away on the 26 September 2011. Joe Johnson - my best drinking buddy, bowel cancer - I am still sharing a pint with him. Nigel Moore - happiest plumber in the world, passed away 03/05/16. Also, Bryan and Cynthia Rodwell who were Nigel's mother and father in law. Christine and Dave Cooke - good friends through Rodillians Rugby Club. Christine was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2003 and was treated with chemotherapy. It reoccurred in 2009 and treated with a bone marrow transplant and Christine survived. Sadly, David was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014 and passed away in October 2015. Brenda Farrar – very good family friend and a wonderful woman. Diagnosed with cancer in late 2016 and died early 2017. Jenny Connor - best mates, diagnosed with ovarian cancer July 2012, passed away July 2016. Lynn Lumb - friend and colleague of Maureen, suffered 2 bouts of breast cancer in 2005 and 2016. Karen Stead - friend and colleague of Maureen, survived pancreatic cancer, one of the 5%. Only 5 in 100 live to 5 years, this could be lower with some tumours. There has been no change in the survival rates in the last forty years. It the hardest to treat. Tony Williams - friend, neighbour and proud Welshman, diagnosed with liver cancer in February 2018. He sadly passed away in March 2018, only 56 years old. There is only a 2% survival rate with this type of cancer. There are more names I could mention - Paul Greaves, Don Gartside, and other people I have known throughout my life. All the above gave me permission to include them on this page.

All Cancer Types

Cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years. Consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further. Help Cancer Research UK improve results even faster.
