Earlier this year, towards the beginning of our time in lockdown, my wife, Rachel was diagnosed with suspected ovarian cancer. After some COVID related delays (this was the point when the hospitals were very busy) she had a major operation and we nervously waited for the results. When they arrived there was good news and bad news. The bad news was that Rachel did have a form of cancer. The good news was that it was a rare form (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei) which does not spread aggressively, and has all been removed by the surgery. She still needs to have regular check-ups, but doesn’t need chemotherapy or any other ongoing care. We are very aware of how lucky we are, and also that other people are not as lucky. One of those less lucky people was my mum, who died of cancer when I was a young man. She was first diagnosed with it when I was the same age as my son is now. I signed up for this challenge on her birthday. I will ride the 300 miles on a real bike on real roads – no Peloton/Zwift/exercise bike involved here! In case you are interested I’ll be starting the challenge on an early 90’s steel framed Italian road bike. I like the way steel rides and it reminds me of when I started cycling as a teenager.
