Paddleboarding the Union Canal

Sat 22 Aug 2020 - Sun 31 Oct 2021

In memory of

my cousin Lukas

My Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. My cousin Lukas was diagnosed with brain tumor in 2016 at the age of 33. He has gone through all of the treatments available from brain operations to remove the tumor, chemotherapy to alternative treatments. Unfortunately, the tumor was too aggressive and no treatment could save him. On 28th March 2020 cancer has taken our dear cousin away at the age of 36, photographed on the right at my other cousins wedding. We have unfortunately also lost our dearest grandmother in February 2020. She was a great example what research into cancer has managed to achieve with fights against breast cancer after she successfully managed to win her fight over 10 years ago. Unfortunately, she was less lucky with a fight against heart attack and passed away 5 weeks before my cousin Lukas. Lukas was extremely active and he was planning to visit me in Scotland and see its beauties together with his family, but unfortunately never made it. His favourite quote was by 'Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing'. In his memory we will attempt to paddle on a stand up paddleboard the Union Canal starting in Edinburgh and finishing at the Falkirk Wheel in one day. The canal is 31 miles long, and with an average of 4 miles per hour paddleboarding speed, it will be a challenging full day with no doubt a lot of blisters by the end of it. I have been actively involved in the Business Beats Cancer for Cancer Research UK since we established the board two years ago raising essential funds for the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, The Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre brings together cancer scientists and clinicians from across the University of Edinburgh, delivering outstanding cancer research and improved patient care. With full integration of the Edinburgh Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre and the Host and Tumour Profiling Unit, the scientific and technological expertise will result in new therapies being developed for patients faster. The main emphasis is on the brain tumors, which is why I have decided to raise funds for the Edinburgh centre, so together we can beat cancer!
