I’m taking part in Shine Night Walk to help beat Leukaemia

My Story

I am doing the Shine, night walk in September and raising money for Leukaemia Research and anyone that knows me knows this is a charity close to my heart. As In June 2000 my son was diagnosed with AML ( Acute Myeloid Leukaemia) he was only 9 months old when he was diagnosed and this was supposed to be a special time as a new family as he was our only child at the time. He had intensive treatment (Chemotherapy) over 6 months at Great Ormond Street hospital, however due to his immune system being very low he could only come home once in that 6 months. In Dec 2000 he eventually came home as he was in remission and 5yrs later was given the all clear but will have to have check ups for life. He is now a healthy 22yr old who plays football 4-5 times a week and has driven us mad over the years. We have also had 2 other members of the family who have also had Leukaemia. My cousins daughter was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) in Dec 2007 and she was 2 1/2yrs old and had to undergo 2yrs & 9 months of treatment between Great Ormond Street, William Harvey and Home. She completed remission in Feb 2012, Again she is doing well and is enjoying life as an 18yr old. Then in June 2021 an other cousins daughter was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) she was 14yrs old and won't finish her treatment until September 2023. She has had to miss 10 months of school so far due to her immune system being low and also being unwell. She has recently gone back part-time. Yet she is still expected to take her GCSEs next year as normal. She never complains about how she feels she just gets on with it. This is a horrible disease and no-one should have to go through this let alone our children or their children. Please donate whatever you can, even if its £1 or £500 this will go a long way for research and treatment 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s ground breaking work. Donate to my Giving Page today and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

CAUSE

Leukaemia

Five-year survival rates for leukaemia have more than tripled in the last 40 years. But despite this progress, around 4,600 people still lose their lives to the disease every year. Almost a third of all cancers diagnosed in children are leukaemia. Your donation can help Cancer Research UK find better treatments and new ways to prevent the disease in adults and children.
