My Story

I am racing for my dad, Darryl Vaughan, who was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Grade 4 Brain tumour on the 17th July 2017, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. He was a loving, providing, caring, strong, hilarious and amazing person. He was and still is one of the best parts of my life and his humour, his love of music (though we complained about how loud he used to blast his Genesis albums through our speakers), and his love of cycling, cooking amazing food, gardening, travel and just his overall inspiring attitude to getting things done with your life and enjoying it as much as you can while you have the ability, will stay with me forever. He will always inspire me, and i will be reminded of all the things i loved about him every single day. I am very grateful for the 18 years of my life that i was with him. He was born on the 14th December 1958. After his diagnosis in July 2017, the average life expectancy of his form of cancer was 12-18 months given treatment. He fought through chemotherapy, and radiotherapy on his tumour which managed to suppress its growth temporarily. This gave him time to enjoy 2 amazing years with us in which we travelled as much as he was able to. However we had to constantly adapt to his needs as he slowly deteriorated. As thing's were starting to look relatively hopeful again, he suffered 4 massive seizures (due to growth of the tumour) on the 23rd November 2018 and was hospitalised. We said our goodbyes over the next 2 days after as he was unconscious and struggling very hard to breath. We did not expect him to wake up. However he did amazingly pull through. The seizures he had had took a drastic toll on him and he could no longer walk more than a few steps, was bed-ridden and in constant pain. This meant his mental health and condition started to also deteriorate much faster, especially with the tumour being where it was in his brain. It drastically affected his speech, memory, cognitive/perceptive abilities and personality which was devastating to watch. He was in hospital for around 3 months, in which time we worked to adapt the house for him to come home. He did, eventually, on the 15th Feb. However only a few days after he suffered another seizure and slipped into unconsciousness. After a week unconscious and his body struggling to breath and keep his heart beating, he eventually passed away peacefully with his family close by on the 25th of February 2019. He was 60 years old, with 5 children (the oldest 41, and youngest 15) and an incredibly strong and loyal wife, Andrea. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. No-one should have to watch someone they love suffer and fade away because of such an unfair, cruel and aggressive disease. Ever. Every single pound you donate makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s work, so please give whatever you can, please. Thank you
