Shine Night Walk Cardiff 10k 2022
In March this year I was told the sentence nobody wants to hear " You have breast cancer" this was a huge shock, as I had no lumps or changes to the breast just a slight change to my nipple, I feel extremely lucky, although the cancer was in two places and this point and I did need a mastectomy my cancer was found at an early stage, I had a few months of scans, biopsies etc and the consultant was confident that I could have a reconstruction at the same time. I had the operation in May, I think the worse moment for me was walking into the hospital alone for my own surgery and walking myself to the operating theatre. My family and friends have been amazing and really supportive. and I feel fortunate that my surgeon and breast nurse were lovely, which made a difference. I knew I could pick up the phone with any problems and questions before and after my operation. I had the amazing news at the end of June that no further treatment is needed I just need a yearly check up with my consultant. When you go through something like cancer it does makes a huge impact on your life and is never too far away in your thoughts, I do feel extremely lucky that I am survivor, I am doing this walk for all the women that have lost their lives to Breast Cancer. and for my lovely Mum who died far too young from Ovarian Cancer.
With almost 140 women diagnosed every day, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. And, although rarer, around 350 men are also diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The good news is more than two-thirds of women now survive 20 years or more. Help Cancer Research UK find new ways to diagnose and treat the disease.
