My Story
After a seizure in December 2020, and many investigations and tests I was diagnosed in January 2021 with a rare form of Thyroid Cancer (papillary thyroid cancer with a follicular variant). This had spread to my Brain (hence the seizure), but also my lungs. Soon after I had surgery to remove my thyroid and primary cancer which was a success, followed by radio active iodine treatment for all areas and Gamma knife laser treatment which targeted my tumour in my head. The result have been mixed, the Gamma knife treatment reduced the size of the tumour in my brain and although not completely gone seems to have gone dormant. ✅ However, after a number radio-active iodine treatments although initially a success, the treatment had run its course. ❌ Obviously hearing this news was tough and what were the next steps going to be? To my surprise my doc says he didn’t want me to try another treatment straight away and just monitor me until things start changing as my health was good. Fast forward to today, 2025. Well, I have signed up to do an ultra marathon (36miles). Much to the surprise of my doctor. Since October 2022 my doctor has just been monitoring my cancer and how it is developing. Last October (2024) the tumours on my lungs have started to change and grow, now they are looking into when and what treatment I will need to start to manage/reduce the tumours. I’ve accepted this is going to be a long journey and there will be ups and downs along the way however I do love to run it is my escape it fixes me when I’m down and gives me something positive to focus on. This Ultra marathon is to prove to myself that I am still capable of doing what I love doing (albeit 36miles in one go is a lot!) and even though my doctor doesn’t think I will be able complete it, I will prove him wrong! I am raising money for more research into Thyroid Cancer which is very underfunded the more research which can be done the more hope there is for understanding and treating these rare diseases. Thank you all for your generous donations, they are all going to a great cause
