My Story

This is Bob's story as well as mine. In 2015 he was diagnosed with lung cancer, an operation to remove part of his lung was successful. Around February 2020 he began complaining of pain in his back and side. His GP sent him for an x-ray, but nothing showed up. Then came lockdown so all further investigations were put on hold. All his GP could do was give him painkillers. The pain got worse and worse, the painkillers got stronger and nothing helped. Finally on the 29th October he had the long awaited MRI at Northampton General Hospital, not easy when he was in so much pain, but they spotted something! That same night they sent him to Leicester Royal Infirmary for an emergency operation to remove some diseased bone from his spine. The biopsy came back with Cancer, it had returned. On 11th November he was transferred back to NGH, on arrival he tested positive for Covid! Covid didn't seem to have hit him too hard, they gave him intravenous antibiotics and he had to have oxygen for quite a while. He did eventually get over it, but somehow he didn't seem to be getting any stronger and the pain in his back from the operation site was getting worse rather than better. He still needed a lot of help to get out of bed and using the loo. On the 16th December he had a CT scan, it showed he had an abcess on the operation site which was flooding his body with infection, the intravenous antibiotics began again. Then on the 22nd December came the devastating news, it was terminal, he had just weeks to live. The next day he was transferred to Cynthia Spencer Hospice and on Boxing Day afternoon they allowed me to visit him, the first time I'd seen him for 5 months. He was a mere shadow of my brother, he couldn't speak, but I know he knew I was there, I swear there was a hint of a smile, I held his hand and he found the strength to give it a squeeze. I stayed with him for about an hour until the pain got too bad and the nurse topped up his Midazolam. As he drifted off to sleep I told him he was the best brother ever and I loved him. I hoped the end would come quickly and after 11 months he would finally be out of pain. The infection had turned to Sepsis and he died around 9am on the 28th December 2020 He was only 73 years old, far too young for me to be arranging his funeral, but that's just what I'm doing. It's going to be on the 29th January and not everybody who wants to be there will be able to. So I'm asking for your donation in memory of my lovely brother. He may have died of the infection, but it was the cancer that meant he needed the operation in the first place, so we must continue the fight to find a cure. Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page. Cancer is happening right now, which is why I’m fundraising right now for Cancer Research UK. There’s no time to lose! Donate to my page today and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
