My Story

The Longest Day Motorcycle Challenge – In Memory of Lyndon This year, I’ll be taking on the Longest Day Motorcycle Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK — and it’s a challenge that means more to me than I can properly put into words. I’m doing this in memory of my uncle, Lyndon, who we sadly lost last year to Asbestos related lung cancer. His illness was cruel, and he and his family suffered greatly in his final months. Knowing that some of the closest people in your life are enduring that kind of pain changes you forever. Taking on this challenge is my way of honouring him. It’s also my way of fighting back against the disease that took him from us. What Is The Longest Day Challenge? This is not your average charity ride. Riders travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats — roughly 1,000 miles — in one single day, within 24 hours, on the longest day of the year (21 June). To make it even more demanding, the rules state that the motorcycle must cost no more than £600 to buy and make road legal. That means no luxury touring bikes — just endurance, focus, determination… and a machine that may or may not make it. The route avoids motorways and includes checkpoints across the country before reaching John O’Groats early the following morning — exhausted, emotional, and often on bikes that are barely holding together. Since it began in 2013, the event has raised over £630,000 for life-saving research, with around £130,000 raised each year. It’s built on grit, resilience and the shared hope that one day cancer won’t take the people we love. Why I’m Doing It Again I completed this challenge in 2024 — and it pushed me further than anything I had ever done. By the time I finished, I swore I would never put myself through it again. But life has a way of changing your perspective. After losing my uncle, and then seeing my wife’s best friend battle breast cancer — thankfully surviving — I realised how many families are living with fear, uncertainty and heartbreak every single day. If putting myself through one incredibly tough day can help raise money that might save tens, hundreds, or even thousands of lives, then it is worth every mile, every ache and every moment of doubt. If you’re able to donate — no matter how small — it would mean a great deal to me and my family. Every contribution helps fund vital research and brings us one step closer to a world where cancer no longer devastates lives. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for your support

CAUSE

Lung cancer

Each year more than 43,500 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK. We urgently need to drive progress so that more people survive their disease. Cancer Research UK is at the forefront in lung cancer research and is funding various projects to tackle the disease head on. This includes the TRACERx study, Cancer Research UK’s largest investment into lung cancer to date. This study has already transformed our understanding of how lung cancer evolves and is continuing to shed light on how to prevent, detect and treat the disease.
