We're cycling 300 miles this September for Cancer Research UK

My Story

Thank you for visiting our Cancer Research UK Cycle 300 page. Our Story In February this year our world was turned upside down when Zoe was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite initially being told not to worry about a lump she had discovered, the results of a “precautionary” biopsy came back positive. We were in total shock for several days because, like most, we believed "it could never happen to us". Sadly, it was happening and we were suddenly facing life as a young family dealing with cancer. If the initial diagnosis wasn't painful enough, the days and weeks after were excruciating while we waited for test results, consultant appointments and more test results to determine the extent of what we were facing. After what seemed like a lifetime Zoe was told she would require an operation immediately followed by around six months of chemotherapy and then, most likely, an additional month of radiotherapy. The operation was successful in removing the lump and fortunately there was no evidence of the cancer having spread. Following the operation it was confirmed that Zoes cancer type was Grade 3 triple negative breast cancer. At the time of writing (30.07.19), Zoe is well into her treatment and has two months of chemo left before she starts a course of radiotherapy shortly after. Anyone who knows Zoe will know what a trooper she is and from the outset she's been determined to get on with things and smash her way through the treatment. We are all so proud of how she has faced up to her diagnosis and how she has remained positive throughout. We're confident that once Zoe has finished her treatment this year we can return to enjoying life as a "normal" family. This year has been far from normal though. Living with cancer in our family feels like living under a cloud that doesn't disappear. It has robbed us of precious family holidays we had planned and the memories we would have made with friends and family. It has put huge pressure on our family and close friends (who have all been unbelievably supportive) as we've tried to keep life as normal as possible for our kids. However, we refuse to let cancer define us as a family. Instead we will use our experience of cancer as a reminder that life is precious and we should always make the most of every day and opportunity. This September, before the end of the month, we will complete 300 miles on our bikes for Cancer Research UK. I will be leading the charge and Zoe will be joining me as and when she can. We will be pedalling harder than ever because we want to raise money for life-saving research and help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Every penny makes a huge difference to vital cancer research so please show your support with a donation to our page. Thank you Mike and Zoe x
