Following a routine mammogram I was diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer last year. I was fortunate as it was caught at an early stage because of the breast screening programme and am grateful for the research that has taken place that enabled me to be treated and to have the opportunity to get on with my life. Those who know me well will know that my mum has successfully been treated for breast cancer twice - she is my hero; even more so now that I truly understand how tough the treatment and recovery is both physically and emotionally. Also for Julie who is the strongest person I have ever had the honour of knowing you are an inspiration to everyone who knows you. Breast cancer is happening right now and can happen to any of us overnight, which is why I'm taking part in a Race for Life 5k to raise money and save lives. This is for my sister, my nieces and girl friends in the hope that you will never need to benefit from the research that this will raise money to support and in thanks for the treatment I received from the teams at Bedford and Addenbrookes Hospitals last year. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
