My mum

My Story
I was twelve years old when I sat with my sister and heard the words from my mum that would change everything: “I have breast cancer.” In that moment the world shifted for our family and everyone who loved her. From that day on, cancer became the nob head of the family. It wasn’t always present, but it was always there in the background. Over the years my mum faced cancer three different times, and each time she fought it with everything she had. But in May 2025 the big C returned again, and this time it had spread. The conversations with doctors changed from treatments and recovery plans to the word none of us ever wanted to hear—terminal. It was numbing. Despite the incredible care and compassion from nurses, doctors and specialists, there were no more medical miracles to hope for. Instead, our focus shifted to making memories and making the most of every moment we had left with mum. Seven months later, mum died at home on Christmas Eve, her favourite day of the year surrounded by the people who loved her most. Like tens of thousands of families affected by cancer every year, this is now part of our story. And it’s why I’ll be running, jogging, walking and very likely limping my way around the 2026 London Marathon to raise money for Cancer Research UK. If you’re able to donate, no matter how big or small, it would mean the world. Every contribution helps fund research that brings us closer to better treatments, better outcomes, and one day a world where fewer families have to hear those words. Thank you so much for your support
