2021 Reading Half Marathon

In memory of

Heather Holdaway

My Story

I'm raising money for Cancer Research UK in memory of my Mum, Heather Holdaway. In January 2019, my mum was told she had lung cancer. It was the 3rd time in her life that she had been told she had cancer, the 3rd time she had to come to terms with what that might meant for her and her family. After several x-rays, scans and biopsies she had major surgery to remove the tumour and part of her lung, which she recovered from amazingly well. Following surgery she had weeks of chemotherapy to give her the best chance of beating cancer and living. Despite the chemotherapy making her feel terrible she continued to fight and was determined not to let the cancer beat her. Unfortunately at the end of August 2019 it became clear that despite surgery and chemotherapy, the cancer had spread. My mums medical team offered her more chemotherapy which may have extended her life by a few weeks or months, but Mum took the brave decision to not have any more chemotherapy and try and be as comfortable as she could in her last few weeks. After being cared for brilliantly by my dad at home she went to Katharine House Hospice where she died bravely and peacefully on the 30th October 2019, 10 short, unbelievably difficult months after finding out she had lung cancer. My mum had to endure cancer on 3 separate occasions in her 73 years. She had numerous operations and chemotherapy a number of times to treat her, and despite the fantastic health care she received, and her determination and fight, the disease just could not be beaten this time. I had never run before June last year, and made myself the promise when I began that I would run a 1/2 marathon in under 2 hours within a year. I chose the Reading 1/2 marathon to attempt to do this as it is where my Mum & Dad met and got married, (and its quite flat!!). Thank you very much for donating to my page today and helping bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
